When Gambel's quail move through
the desert it is customary to put a sentinel on the outlook
for danger. These outposts of the covey seek the highest vantage
points from which to make their observations and if something unusual
show up in the vicinity of the covey the sentinel will sound an
alarm to the rest of the birds.
